Steelwrist launches SQ40 automatic coupler for compact excavators

Steelwrist has expanded its SQ automatic quick coupler range with the launch of the SQ40, designed for compact excavators in the 2–7 tonne class.

The SQ40 enables quick, fully automatic changes of high-flow hydraulic work tools without the operator leaving the cab. The new model, first previewed at Bauma, extends Steelwrist’s SQ technology — which allows simultaneous hydraulic and electrical connection — to smaller machines.

The company’s SQ product line now includes eight models, from SQ40 to SQ90, for excavators up to 70 tonnes.

Steelwrist said the SQ40 has been engineered to deliver a hydraulic flow of up to 70 l/min, achieved through an updated coupling design that increases flow area by 40% compared to a standard 3/8-inch fitting.

The new coupler also introduces the H6 electrical connector, a fully integrated 6-pin system built for durability and environmental protection.

The SQ40 follows the symmetrical S40 standard, making it compatible with existing work tools without modification. Its modular construction allows fast upgrades from S to SQ systems, with flexible hose routing and simplified installation.

Steelwrist CEO Stefan Stockhaus said interest in the SQ40 has been strong since its debut:“For the past two years I have been running the SQ40 size on my own excavator and once you get used to not having to leave the cab when changing hydraulic powered work tools you never want to go back.

“Since we introduced SQ40 at Bauma there has been a lot of interest for the product from many customers, and with the introduction of the SQ40 quick coupler we can also offer a sandwich tiltrotator installation. This is beneficial when you want to easily disconnect the tiltrotator to use for example a breaker.”

The launch follows a recent Steelwrist webinar, Steelwrist in Demolition – Innovation, Automatic Couplers & More, which explored how automatic couplers and open standards can improve safety and efficiency in demolition. The company has also introduced a new online hub dedicated to its demolition solutions.
