Danish environmental services pioneer Solum is to open the country’s first fully automatic robot sorting plant for C&D (construction and demolition) and C&I (commercial and industrial) waste.

The robotic station will sort up to 25,000 t of mixed waste a year, including combustible waste, bulky waste, metal, wood and plastic, with artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered robots replacing manual processes and operating independently around the clock.

The new plant, designed around ZenRobotics’ technology and distributed by ReTec Miljø, is expected to be operational this summer, with robots sorting up to 25,000 t of mixed waste a year.

“We are very pleased to be able to help place the first ZenRobotics facility in Denmark, which is also the first robotic sorting line for this type of waste in Denmark,” said Peter Ry Schmidt, sales consultant at ReTec Miljø.

“Artificial intelligence is at the core of the facility, meaning that Solum will now get much more out of sorting their waste than before. A robot plant will help to revolutionise waste sorting, not only at Solum, but potentially throughout Denmark.”

The automated robots are powered by advanced AI and sensor technologies which make it possible to continuously fine-tune the fractions and separate different types of waste, thus improving recycling possibilities and the circular economy.

Solum’s plant consists of multiple robot arms that lift objects up to 30 kg (66 lb) and together handle up to 4,000 picks an hour.
