VIDEO: Brown and Mason carries out explosive demolition at UK power station

Brown & Mason has released a video which shows the explosive demolition it carried out on the West Burton power station earlier this month.

The UK-based contractor said it carried out the works at the site, near Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, at 11:00am on 17th July.

The video shows the turbine hall and DA bay of the former coal-fired power station being brought down with controlled explosives.

Brown and Mason have been working at the West Burton Power Station site since early 2024, following the plant’s closure in March 2023. Over this period, the company has been undertaking a comprehensive decommissioning and demolition programme expected to continue until around 2028.

Earlier works included the controlled explosive demolition of Precipitators 3 and 4 in February 2024, followed by the demolition of Precipitators 1 and 2 and the Stack Test Installation building in May 2024.

The company said the July demolition of the turbine hall and DA bay followed “months of meticulous preparation,” which involved “extensive de-planting and asset recovery.”

It said the four turbines and associated equipment were carefully removed, leaving the structure ready for demolition.

The activities form part of a wider plan to return the site to brownfield status, facilitating future redevelopment including the UK’s first nuclear fusion power plant under the STEP programme.
