Rhodar demolishes tower blocks in Hull

Rhodar has completed the strip out stage of three tower blocks in Halifax, deconstruction of the tower blocks has now begun

Specialist enabling works provider Rhodar has completed phase one of demolition works to three 18 storey tower blocks in Halifax in the north of England.

Phase one of the demolition works began in 2018. The internal strip out of the tower blocks took 80 Rhodar operatives 40 weeks to complete.

The company was appointed to the £6 million (US$7.5 million, as of today’s exchange rates) project by social housing landlords Together Housing Group in partnership with the local council.

The tower block demolition forms part of the Calderdale Together Investment Partnership, a regeneration scheme which aims to deliver improved transport, public spaces and up to 650 new homes over the next five years.

Jason Davy, managing director at Rhodar, said: “This is a prestigious and high-profile project and our teams are thrilled to be a part of a scheme of such importance in the region. Our expertise in both asbestos removal and demolition allows us to provide the complete package to enable developments such as this and it is a pleasure to be able to deliver the first phase successfully alongside partners of the scheme.”

Rhodar said it will now begin the next phase of demolition works. The company will carry out the top down deconstruction of the tower blocks, removing approximately 10 storeys from each block using a 48 m (157 ft) Hitachi Zaxis high reach excavator. A further high reach kit will then demolish the remaining structures.

According to the company site completion will take an estimated 20 weeks.
