The National Demolition Association (NDA) has issued guidance to support contractors and first responders involved in recovery efforts following the devastation caused by wildfires in Southern California.

The fires, which have led to widespread closures, evacuations, and displacement of communities in the Los Angeles area, have so far left over 12,400 structures damaged, and hazardous conditions in their wake.

To assist those working in the aftermath, the NDA has compiled a list of resources aimed at mitigating potential risks associated with debris removal and recovery.

The association said: “The National Demolition Association (NDA) is deeply saddened by the wildfires currently ravaging the area and our hearts go out to those affected by this disaster.”

“NDA understands that disasters such as wildfires cause significant structural damage and it will be a lengthy process to rebuild. Below are links to resources we’ve collected for contractors and first responders to safely mitigate potential hazards during the immediate aftermath and recovery efforts.”

The association emphasized the importance of engaging qualified contractors to safely clear potentially toxic materials, citing health and safety as critical considerations during these operations.

Among the resources shared are:

CalRecycle: Maintains a list of contractors specializing in fire debris removal, available for use by general contractors and subcontractors.

FEMA: Provides updated advisories and safety tips to aid in disaster response and recovery efforts nationwide.

OSHA: Offers guidance on emergency preparedness, hazard awareness, and safety measures for workers involved in emergency response and recovery.

American Red Cross: Accepting donations specifically to support individuals impacted by the California wildfires.

Hiring the Right Demolition Contractor: A guide to ensure the selection of contractors with proper expertise for safe and effective debris removal.

The NDA also encouraged its Southern California Chapter members and other interested parties to connect with CalRecycle for further details on recovery efforts.

Addressing the challenges posed by wildfire recovery, the NDA reiterated the importance of proper training and safety protocols. “Using qualified contractors to clear potentially toxic debris is critical to health and safety,” the association noted in its announcement.

The guidance highlights the role of collaboration between industry professionals and regulatory bodies to ensure safe and efficient rebuilding efforts following the disaster.
