Lawson Demolition Ltd, part of Lawson Group Ltd, has commenced the clearance of part of the 30 hectare Orb steelworks site in Newport, Gwent, as part of a redevelopment project being carried out by Taylor Wimpey South Wales to provide a mix of affordable and private residential properties.

Lawson is working to clear 21 buildings on the northeast section of the site, including office blocks, a training centre, gate office, conference and medical centres, in addition to an old air raid shelter. Demolition will include all hard standings and foundations. In addition, Lawson will also carry out asbestos removal and disposal, with other waste from the demolition being crushed and reused on site.

Demolition work began in June and is expected to last until October 2009, with housing construction on the site being completed during 2010. Lawson Group Ltd director Martin Wilson said: "We are delighted to have been selected to undertake the demolition work on this new development. It is a considerably complex project, and our team have already put an enormous amount of time into the preparation and planning, especially with regard to health and safety. We are looking forward to carrying out the work over the next few months."
