Norway selects Amentum and Multiconsult Norge to support nuclear decommissioning plan

Norsk Nukleær Dekommisjonering (NND), the Norwegian governmental body responsible for nuclear decommissioning, has awarded a contract to US-based Amentum and its joint venture partner Multiconsult Norge to provide safety case management and training services for the country’s nuclear clean-up programme.

The scope of work includes developing a methodology for producing safety cases for both existing and new nuclear facilities. This includes facilities that are shut down, undergoing post-operational clean-out, or in the process of decommissioning, as well as infrastructure used for the storage and management of spent fuel and radioactive waste.

The contract will cover work at Norway’s national waste repository, KLDRA, and two former research sites: the Halden reactor, which was used for fuel and materials testing, and the JEEP-II neutron scattering facility at Kjeller.

Amentum and Multiconsult have been supporting NND since 2022 under an engineering and technical framework agreement. Their work has included developing Norway’s decommissioning strategy and creating approaches for managing spent fuel and radioactive waste.

Andy White, senior vice president of Amentum Energy & Environment International, said: “This contract award is a strong vote of confidence from a client and comes at a pivotal time when Norway is considering the deployment of small modular reactors to meet its future energy needs.”

He added: “We will bring our extensive global experience in nuclear safety analysis – spanning the entire lifecycle – to this project, with particular emphasis on assessing legacy facilities and supporting their decommissioning in line with advanced safety standards.”
