Amentum secures Lithuanian nuclear decommissioning contract

Amentum has been appointed as a consultant for the dismantling of steam drum separators in Units 1 and 2 of Lithuania’s Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP), marking a significant step in decommissioning the former electricity generator.

The project, which will span seven years and is valued at €5.5 million (US$5.4 million), will be managed under FIDIC Yellow Book Conditions, with funding from European Commission grants and administration by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
Amentum’s role will include supporting INPP’s Project Management Unit (PMU) and acting as FIDIC Engineer for the dismantling contract.
Andy White, head of Amentum Energy & Environment International, said: “We will deploy our extensive nuclear decommissioning and waste management experience from the UK, France, Czechia and Slovakia to this ground-breaking project.”
The consultancy will assist INPP in managing the removal of the steam drum separators—large units positioned over the graphite core to direct steam to the turbines.
Amentum will also support the PMU in overseeing the design and safety procedures for dismantling and fragmenting the drums and related equipment, located within the radiologically contaminated primary circuit. Additionally, Amentum will be available to support future decommissioning phases at INPP.
Commenting on Amentum’s role, Linas Baužys, Director General of INPP, stated, “The FIDIC service provider, Amentum, is a significant contributor to the dismantling of the steam drum separators.
“Their large international experience both as a FIDIC engineer and while working in various similar nuclear power projects will be a contributory factor to the success of the project’s joint implementation.”
Before ceasing operations in 2009, INPP’s two RBMK-1500 reactors generated up to 70% of Lithuania’s electricity.
Amentum’s legacy firms have been involved with INPP for over two decades, contributing to projects such as the New Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility, essential for the plant’s decommissioning.
