Engineering intelligence: Can AI make demolition smarter, safer, and more sustainable?

22 May 2025

D&Ri is proud to announce that Dr. Mahesh Bailakanavar, Associate Principal at Thornton Tomasetti, will take the stage at WDS 2025 to explore how artificial intelligence and machine learning are transforming demolition planning, risk mitigation, and resource optimisation.

A specialist in risk and safety management with a PhD in Engineering Mechanics from Columbia University, Mahesh will outline how Thornton Tomasetti is applying AI-powered tools—such as computer vision algorithms—to improve scrap identification, valuation, and recovery.

These innovations, he argues, are vital to promoting sustainability, circular economy principles, and cost-effective deconstruction.

He will also share insights from recent projects, including the demolition of the WH Sammis Power Plant, and explain how technologies like drone surveys, laser scans, and non-destructive testing are being combined with AI to support safer, data-driven approaches to complex industrial teardowns.

“The use of AI in demolition is no longer a future concept—it’s already reshaping how major projects are planned and delivered,” said Leila Steed, WDS Programme Organiser.

“Mahesh’s session will provide crucial insight into the utilisation of AI-based technologies and how it can be used to best advantage.”
