A new waste transfer station has opened at the Yolo County Central landfill in Woodland, California, to serve the surrounding area. The new facility will be operated by the Yolo County Planning and Public Works Division of Integrated Waste Management to provide C&D waste recycling for the surrounding county.

Working in conjunction with WM Recycle America, Yolo County will accept construction and demolition waste in mixed loads, rather than in segregated loads as is more normal. A wide range of material will be accepted by the site, ranging from carpeting, concrete and drywall through to timber, plastic and green waste.

Derek Harrington of WM Recycle America is reported by the Daily Democrat as saying: “We find the convenience of mixed loads allows for far greater recovery of material and saves time and money on behalf of the contractors and builders needing to meet 50% diversion requirements.”

Estimates indicate that construction and demolition waste makes up more than 20% of the waste stream going to landfill in California.
