Video: McMahon demolishes Bell Bay for green hydrogen project

McMahon Services, working with Hydro Tasmania, has carried out the controlled demolition of the Bell Bay Power Station in Tasmania, Australia.
The company used 28 kg of explosives in a precisely timed blast that brought down the 24 m-high, 63 m-long building safely within a 400 m exclusion zone.
All asbestos and hazardous materials have been carefully managed to the highest safety standards, the company said.
Demolition of the boiler is scheduled for later this month, with all works expected to be completed by early 2026.
The project will clear the way for ABEL Energy’s green hydrogen and methanol project. The company aims to produce 360,000 tonnes of renewable green methanol per year, combining green hydrogen from a 300 MW water electrolysis plant with synthesis gas from a biomass gasifier.
According to ABEL, the production process will use 100% renewable power from hydro and new wind assets, alongside biomass residues recovered from existing Tasmanian plantation forestry operations.
