VIDEO: Brown & Mason takes down West Burton boiler house

The boiler house at West Burton A power station, in Nottinghamshire, UK, has been successfully demolished by Brown & Mason. The 782,000m³ structure was brought down on 29 January 2026 using controlled explosives.

The single largest structure at the former coal-fired power station, it housed four boilers which each fed a 500 MW turbine.
The West Burton project with EDF Energy was initiated in February 2024 with the demolition of precipitators 3 and 4. In July 2025, it was the turn of the turbine hall and DA bay, followed in October by two absorbers and a coal boom stacker. The full site is due to be cleared by 2028.
The UK-based demolition specialists described the event as “another milestone in the country’s transition from fossil fuels towards greener energy sources, with West Burton being home to STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) Fusion, the UK’s programme to build a prototype fusion energy plant and create a UK-led fusion industry.”
