Finnish contractor SSA Rakennus has deployed a Leka Toras 35 electric hammer from Lekatech for use during a demolition and construction project in Haaga, Helsinki.

The site contains an old primary school building which is being transformed into a residential property, while new apartment blocks are being constructed in the surrounding grounds.

Several old structures are being demolished to make way, and bedrock excavation is also underway.

The project is in a densely built residential area with many neighbouring properties, among the closest neighbours is a daycare centre. As a result, noise and vibration must be mitigated and controlled.

These factors, along with sustainability and energy efficiency, were part of the consideration when choosing the electric hammer from Lekatech.

Lekatech said the Leka Toras 35 electric hammer delivers up to 75% greater energy efficiency compared to a hydraulic version through using power from the excavator or from the power grid.

As well as efficient and productive operation, it also requires less input energy, with electricity only consumed when an impact is delivered.

Furthermore, the electric hammer, which is designed for use with 7–16-ton base machines, does not produce emissions and is quieter in operation, said Lekatech.

SSA Rakennus was keen that the neighbouring properties at the site should be disturbed as little as possible. Site supervisor Arttu Manni commented that the hammer has “definitely been quieter in terms of sound, and it has not caused vibrations in the neighbouring buildings when striking.”

He added that the attachment has proved to be not only practical in everyday use, but also a good fit for the company’s projects more broadly.

“We naturally also monitor fuel consumption and the carbon footprint of our construction sites, and we have a very positive impression of this hammer. We could certainly see ourselves using one on the next project as well,” he concluded.

Designed for rock and concrete breaking, the Leka Toras 35 electric hammer was the 2024 winner of the Manufacturers’ Innovation: Tools & Attachments category at the World Demolition Awards.
