The contractor, along with its joint venture partner McLean Contracting Company, recently signed a contract with the Port of Virginia for the provision of upgrades to the Norfolk International Terminals (NIT) in Norfolk, Virginia.

The NIT is a semi-automated container terminal that comprises three different sections; the North terminal, the South terminal and the Central Rail Yard, with a total annual TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) capacity of 2.2 million.

Works to upgrade the terminal’s North Wharf are part of a US$650 million, two-phase renovation and modernisation project that will see the North Wharf at the NIT increase its annual TEU capacity by 1.4 million.

The US-based subsidiary of the Swedish construction giant will carry out the demolition of existing marine wharf fenders and mooring hardware.

This will be followed by the installation of new fenders, mooring bollards, a steel sheet pile toe wall, wharf repairs, and mooring dolphins, as well as the installation of a new 120’ gauge ship-to-shore crane rail.

Skanska’s work on the project is scheduled to begin later this month and is expected to be completed in January of 2026.

In the past several months, Skanska USA has secured a number of large-scale, high profile demolition and construction contracts.

Among them are the expansion of the Jackson Memorial Hospital emergency department for Florida-based healthcare provider Jackson Health System, and the renovation of the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, in preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
