The contract, awarded by McConnell Dowell, followed damage sustained during the 2023–24 cyclone season. The scope included the removal of structurally compromised sections of the wharf to allow reconstruction to proceed.
The company said the project required rapid mobilisation to a remote island location, where Liberty Industrial deployed personnel, equipment and resources under strict environmental controls.
Remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and daily 3D sonar imaging were used to assess the submerged wharf structures and guide dismantling works in conditions of poor underwater visibility.
As part of the project, six tonnes of asbestos-containing material were removed to ensure safe disposal and minimise environmental impact.
Despite the challenges of the remote site and damaged structures, the works were completed on schedule.
“This project is a testament to the agility and technical strength of our team,” said Mathew Clenton, Project Manager. “Our ability to mobilise immediately and apply engineered solutions in such a remote and challenging environment ensured the safe removal of damaged infrastructure, and enabled our client to proceed with reconstruction works without delay.”
