Komatsu extends Williams F1 engineering partnership

The renewed agreement will expand technical collaboration between the two companies, including work on advanced engineering, knowledge exchange and future talent development.

Komatsu said its expertise in hydraulics and advanced manufacturing would form part of the extended partnership, with Komatsu engineers helping to develop key components for future Williams Formula 1 cars.

The company said the collaboration reflects shared engineering demands between heavy equipment and motorsport, where performance, precision and reliability are central to development.

Komatsu has developed hydraulic and other systems used in construction, mining and forestry equipment, including autonomous mining trucks and precision machinery operating in demanding environments.

The relationship between Komatsu and Williams dates back to the 1990s, when Komatsu manufactured gear components for Williams’ 1996 and 1997 Formula 1 World Championship-winning cars.

The two companies renewed their partnership in 2024 and said the latest extension would create further opportunities for technical collaboration.

The agreement also continues the Komatsu Williams Engineering Academy, which each year takes ten engineering students from around the world for mentoring, hands-on experience and access to technical learning modules. The academy recruits students from Formula Student and Formula SAE initiatives worldwide.

Komatsu and Williams will also introduce the Komatsu Williams Leadership Academy, a leadership development programme for future Komatsu leaders.

From 2027, Komatsu will expand its involvement across Formula 2, Formula 3 and F1 Academy, supporting initiatives intended to encourage future engineers and strengthen links between industry and motorsport.

Komatsu said further details of the technical collaboration, academy activity and leadership programme would be announced as the initiatives develop.
