Dundee, UK, based contractor Safedem has been awarded the contract to demolish St Nicolas House in Aberdeen, the former City Council headquarters building in the centre of the Scottish city in a contract reported to be worth £3.7 (US$5.9 million).

Safedem had previously been engaged in a separate contract to carry out the soft strip of the building, with this work commencing in July 2012 and completed by the end of 2012. The 14 storey structure was completed in 1968 and served as the Council’s HQ until 2011. According to reports, Safedem plans to deconstruct the main tower and the lower adjoining buildings.

Councillors voted for the demolition of the structure in October 2011 and the cleared site is to be sold off to allow for a redevelopment that would regenerate the east end of the city centre - the 0.92 hectare brownfield site is considered to be suitable for hotel, office, residential, retail and leisure use.
