Demolition has begun on Komatsu Mining Corp.’s 44-acre former manufacturing complex in West Milwaukee, Wisconsin, marking the next stage in the site’s redevelopment for new uses.
The company closed operations there in 2022, completing its relocation to a newly built 58-acre corporate campus in Milwaukee’s Harbor District near Lake Michigan.
Komatsu officially celebrated the opening of its new facility in June 2022 with a ceremony attended by Komatsu President and CEO Hiroyuki Ogawa and Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers.
The $285 million South Harbor Campus, officially opened in 2022, includes a 180,000-square-foot office building, a 430,000-square-foot manufacturing facility, advanced technology and R&D labs, a training center, a data solutions center, and an experience center.
The facility produces major components for large mining machines, including electric rope shovels, hybrid shovels, draglines, and blasthole drills and serves as Komatsu’s large gearing, fabrication, and machining center of excellence for surface mining equipment.
At the time, the company said it was designed to foster innovation, sustainability and collaboration and will serve as Komatsu’s large gearing, fabrication and machining center of excellence for its surface mining business.
