Brown & Mason targets offshore decommissioning with partnership
21 July 2025
Demolition and dismantling contractor Brown & Mason is expanding into the offshore oil and gas decommissioning sector through a new partnership at Dales Voe in Lerwick, Shetland.

The company has partnered with Peterson Energy Logistics to attract large-scale decommissioning projects to the strategically located Dales Voe facility, one of the only UK sites capable of handling entire oil platforms brought ashore in a single lift.
Peterson Energy Logistics has operated in Shetland for more than 20 years and provides a wide range of integrated services to the energy industry, including complex logistics, engineering, lifting, and shorebase operations.
“We are confident in the scale of opportunity and Dales Voe being the ideal location to launch our diversification into the offshore sector,” said Richard Brown, UK Operations Director at Brown & Mason.
“As leaders in heavy industrial dismantling, and trusted partners of the energy sector, we are excited to bring our significant expertise to support this market.”
Dales Voe offers deep-water access, ultra-heavy-duty quaysides, and the ability to receive large structures directly from heavy lift vessels like the Pioneering Spirit.
The port has already handled several decommissioning jobs, including the 14,200-tonne Ninian Northern topsides and its 8,500-tonne jacket.
Brown & Mason said it is in the process of acquiring the necessary site operating permit from SEPA and is actively pursuing offshore projects. It said the partnership with Petersongives it immediate access to skilled local labour, equipment, and infrastructure.
Andrew Ellis, Commercial Director at Peterson Energy Logistics, said: “We’re proud to be part of a strong local supply chain which has proven itself time and time again. We are ready to welcome more large-scale projects to Dales Voe with Brown & Mason.”
Lerwick Port Authority Chief Executive Captain Calum Grains added: “We are strategically located with the right assets and people to make this an incredibly efficient option for hundreds of offshore assets.”
Dales Voe was previously identified in a UK Government study as the optimal location for a national ultra-deepwater decommissioning hub.
