As the nominations for the Academy Awards – or Oscars – emerged in the public domain this week, a British demolition contractor has established a Hollywood connection of its own.

PP O’Connor, based in Manchester in the north west of England, has been busy demolishing the Kop stand at Wrexham Football Club, which is now owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and attracting unprecedented levels of publicity in North America including a documentary shown by the streaming service Netflix.

A few years ago, this would have been considered an unlikely scenario for the north Wales-based club, which has operated in the fifth tier of the English game since dropping out of the Football League in 2008.

But with fortunes improving on the field – Wrexham currently sits top of its division and is through to the fourth round of the FA Cup – the owners are thinking big off it as well.

PP O’Connor’s role has so far centred on the demolition of the former Kop stand, after which it moved on to removing the concrete before it excavates the earth mound behind and below the terrace.

Wrexham commented: “During this work, they have exposed a large reinforced concrete foundation of the old stand, with supporters who visited the stadium having no doubt heard the breaking-out work of the hydraulic hammer.”

PP O’Connor specialises in civil engineering, bulk earthworks, remediation, complex demolition and deconstruction and sustainable disposal, and has been in business for more than 50 years.
