The Oriel centre is to be located on an 8,000m2 site, acquired by the Moorefields Eye Hopsital in a government-approved National Health Service (NHS)-to-NHS transaction.

Demolition of six buildings of the former St Pancras Hospital will commence immediately, making way for the construction of a 10-storey building, which will have 47,000m2 of floorspace.

The demolition work is expected to continue until May this year, with close monitoring of dust protections anticipated, given the project’s location within London’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone. Health and safety, noise and vibrations protocols will also be closely monitored.

48 hospitals planned

The new centre is due for completion in 2027 and is part of the UK government’s New Hospital Programme, the biggest hospital building programme in a generation.

The programme is expected to deliver 48 UK hospitals by 2030, five of which are currently under construction and two having reached completion.

Fabienne Viala, chair of Bouygues Construction in the UK, said of the Oirel project, “To be partnering on this world-leading centre in eye care, research and education is an incredibly exciting opportunity for Bouygues UK.

We are so proud to be the leading contractor for this innovative building which will be an exemplar for accessibility, tailored to the needs of its patients, and designed flexibly to meet their future needs.”
