Entries to the World Demolition Awards – part of the World Demolition Summit, taking place on Thursday 12 November – are known for reflecting real life with high profile projects including famous buildings and sites.

The Apex/C&D project in Shoreditch is one of two this year to feature Banksy artwork

But even by those standards, this year is a bit special.

The 2020 awards includes two entries that needed to remove artwork by the anonymous United Kingdom-based street artist Banksy and keep them intact in the process.

First up is Erith Contractors, in the Civils category, which included “unique Banksy artwork salvage and safe removal of site – an unusual and distinctive feat”, as the company’s awards submission detailing a project at Cleveland Street in London’s Fitzrovia described it.

Meanwhile, in Contract of the Year under $1 million, Apex Demolition and C&D Consultants combined on a whole project named after Banksy at Shoreditch in the east of the UK capital.

It included two buildings featuring “Banksy” art installations – a rat holding a chainsaw and a smaller television image – and the companies said neither was easy to remove.

Find out how they fare next week when the World Demolition Awards are announced.
