2010 end for Moscow five storey prefabs

A demolition programme in the Northern District of the Russian capital of Moscow has seen 202 five storey prefabricated residential buildings brought down to date out of a total of 338. Those that still remain will be brought down over the course of the next three years, according to Fazil Izmaylov, first deputy prefect of the Northern District. In the Northern District, this building type covered 1.5 million square meters prior to the start of the demolition programme.

New accommodation blocks, fully adapted for disabled access, are replacing the demolished buildings. Currently 63,400 persons are awaiting rehousing.

The city plans to demolish all its five storey prefabricated apartment blocks, no matter the date of their construction. The total area occupied by this building type across Moscow comes to 32.1 million square meters, some 25% of the developed area of the city.
