With the volume of C&D waste growing rapidly, Dubai Municipality is reported to be establishing a number of measures to deal with the problem of disposal. Currently construction waste is disposed of at a landfill site at Al Warqa.

Acting director general of Dubai Municipality Hussain Nasser Lootah is reported as saying that industrial and construction waste volumes have grown from 3 million tonnes in 2000 to 10.5 million tonnes in 2006.

He said: “The municipality has entered into a contract with Emirates Recycling of Al Rostamani Group to build a treatment plant at Al Lusail area on the Al Ain–Jebel Ali road with an annual capacity of 9.5 million tonnes.”

The US$17.6 million (€13 million) facility will be procured on a build, operate, own, transfer basis and will be able to recycle waste into usable road and construction base aggregate. According to reports, the plant will be constructed 20 m (65 ft) below the surface level to reduce the impact of noise and dust, and will be equipped with external dust suppression systems.
