SEEDA commits to reduce landfill waste

The UK's South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) has undertaken to reduce the amount of C&D and excavation waste it sends to landfill in the south east of England by 50% by the end of 2012 by signing up to a Waste and Resources Action Plan Commitment.
SEEDA expects to benefit from resulting cost reductions and greater resource efficiency, but will also be playing a part in the drive for the UK construction sector to half the 20 million tonnes of waste going to landfill every year.
In a statement, SEEDA's executive director for skills and sustainable prosperity Oona Muirhead said: "We are proud of our commitment to cutting waste going to landfill. WRAP has a wealth of knowledge and experience that we can incorporate into our wider strategy on waste."
WRAP's Halving Waste to Landfill was launched at the end of 2008 with just eight signatories, but after a successful year, that number now stands at more than 200.
