A Rotar RDP42 pulveriser recently acquired by MGL Demolition had its first outing to remove a WWII vintage radar at RAF Boulmer

A Rotar RDP pulveriser is being used by MGL Demolition to remove a radar station dating back to World War II at RAF Boulmer in Northumberland, UK. Supplied to MGL by UK dealer Worsley Plant, the pulveriser is mounted on the short boom of the company’s 34 m (112 ft) Liebherr 954 high reach (nicknamed Big Al), Big Al has its own built in water-based dust suppression system, which MGL reports very well alongside the shape and design of the Rotar.

The station once featured a 57 tonne radar array on its roof and stands two storeys tall, with 0.6 m (2 ft) thick reinforced concrete ceilings and floors, and concrete walls that in places are up to 1 m (3.3 ft) thick. The work is part of eight contracts that MGL is engaged in on behalf of Carillion Enterprise, an industry partner of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, which is the UK Ministry of Defence’s property and services provider.

The performance of the Rotar/Liebherr combo is such that MGL’s personnel have already nicknamed the tool as the ‘special one’.

Derek Watt, contracts manager for MGL Demolition, said: “We are extremely impressed with the Rotar RDP42. After seeing the demonstration that Worsley Plant arranged for us, we had no option but to buy it."

“It is extremely efficient on tough jobs and we are saving both time and money on projects due to its superior productivity. We are definitely looking at adding more Rotar demolition attachments to our range of equipment, and look forward to an ongoing relationship with Worsley Plant.”
