A major transport route for the Port of Duisburg, the new OB-Karl-Lehr Bridge replaces an older bridge of the same name.

Like other bridges in the area, the original structure dated back to World War II.

Although the new OB-Karl-Lehr Bridge has already been built and is in active use, it is not yet in its final position.

The bridge is set to be moved so that sits in exactly the same position as the old bridge.

To facilitate this, Max Bögl was commissioned to carry out dismantling works and deep core drilling for explosive ordnance detection in the existing piers and abutments of the original bridge structure. The contractor conducted various core drillings in the abrasive concrete of the existing piers and abutments, with  exploratory drillings measuring up to 252 mm in diameter and to depths of 4.5 m to 4.9 m, carried out to detect explosive ordnance.

Max Bögl, which completed the works within a week, used Tyrolit screw drill bits for the bores, which as the concrete dated from the war years, contained a high proportion of abrasive sand.
