Waste Management to open new Toronto station for waste processing

Houston, Texas, based Waste Management Inc has announced plans to open a "technologically advanced" facility in Toronto, Canada, for processing waste from construction and demolition sites.

Located south of Queen Elizabeth Way at New Toronto Street, the semi-automated single stream plant is expected to process almost 90,000 tonnes of material in its first year following its opening in the autumn of 2012. The plant will be able to sort delivered materials, meaning that contractors will not need to presort material delivered to the site, leading to increased recovery rates. It will serve western Toronto and the southern parts of Peel Region

WM acquired the plant in late 2011 and it is currently undergoing extensive refurbishment at a cost of C$16 million (Euro12.2 million).

According to WM vice president for eastern Canada Brad Muter: "The site was selected because continued strong construction activity and population growth are anticipated in Toronto."
