Volvo CE reaches new heights with EC950 excavator

The EC950 High Reach uses a modular, multi-configuration design and incorporates stability systems, demolition-specific technologies and integrated safety features for use on multi-story projects, tall structures and confined job sites.

The hook-on modular joints and hydraulic cylinder-type pins mean the machine can be configured on site to suit the specific job requirements. It allows contractors to use the same machine across multiple applications with a variety of pin heights and tool weights.

The flexible design is also aimed at reducing the cost and complexity of transportation. Volvo CE emphasised the maximum transport height of 11 ft 9 in (3.6 m) which it said keeps the excavator “within standard transportation dimensions.”

“The EC950 High Reach has an operating weight of over 400,000 pounds and maximum height of 161 feet while working with a 7,500-pound tool,” said Tony den Hoed, director of strategic demolition accounts for Volvo CE North America. “It combines size, strength and intelligent design to enable customers to achieve outstanding results on the largest and most challenging demolition projects.”

In terms of stability, the EC950 High Reach is designed to meet Volvo’s Ultra High Reach (UHR) criteria for operation with heavy attachments and extended reach.

It features a reinforced undercarriage and a purpose-built upper frame with a boom adapter and enlarged boom and cylinder pins to manage the structural loads encountered in challenging demolition applications. The machine also uses a specially developed ring gear designed to accommodate the high forces generated during operation.

To improve upward visibility, the cab can tilt up to 30 degrees while the removable 84,000-lb (38.1-ton) counterweight and redesigned undercarriage support stable handling of heavy loads.

It is equipped with frame-mounted falling object guard and additional protective components, including undercover protection, track guards, a slew ring cover and cylinder protectors.

Volvo’s Total Moment Indicator (TMI) offers real-time safety monitoring providing operators with continuous feedback to help prevent tipping or overloading. The machine is also fitted with Volvo Smart View cameras, while obstacle detection can be added as an option.

Meanwhile, machine health data and preventative maintenance come via Volvo’s CareTrack standard telematics and ActiveCare Direct advanced telematics.

In response to the increasing scrutiny and regulation demolition operations face around dust creation, Volvo has designed the EC950 High Reach with an integrated dust suppression and cleaning system. Dual water spray nozzles control airborne dust, while a high-pressure washer helps keep components clean during operation.
