The company said the project, known as Project Mercury, is the first phase of a multi-million-pound improvement project at the site and is part of an ongoing programme to “enhance processing capacity, operational efficiency, and sustainability performance across its network.”
The first of two new processing lines has already been installed and entered commissioning, which the company said significantly increases the site’s capacity and improves precision, speed, and material recovery.
It said a second system is to follow in the coming months that, together with the first system, will deliver “substantial gains in throughput and flexibility.”
Alongside the new systems, the site will also benefit from enhanced safety features, including advanced monitoring and fire prevention technology, ensuring resilience and efficiency remain at the core of operations.
“Project Mercury is a landmark investment for Sortera,” said Ian Wilkinson, Operations Director at Sortera. “It underlines our commitment to continuous improvement and long-term infrastructure growth, ensuring we’re equipped to meet the needs of our customers now and well into the future.”
Sortera, which has over 1,000 employees and a turnover of roughly SEK3.6 billion (US$381 million), first moved into the UK in 2022 when it acquired London-based firm O’Donovan Waste Disposal.
