Powerscreen’s Brazilian World Cup outing

11 April 2011

Powerscreen mobile crushers and screens have been at work in Brazil during the refurbishment/demolition work being carried out at a number of stadiums that are being prepared for the 2014 soccer World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games, with a total of US$18.7 billion of investment being put into the necessary infrastructure.

Construction work has already begun in Cuiaba, Salvador and Belo Horizonte, where the company's Metrotrak and XA400S machines are crushing demolition waste to produce fill materials for new stadium construction as well as for roads. According to Ayres de Azevedo Barreto from contractor Detronic Construction: "One of the contracts was scheduled to take six months, but the job was concluded in just four due to the high capacity and performance of Powerscreen's tracked crushers."

C&D waste recycling has assumed considerably greater importance in Brazil as a result of the introduction of national solid waste legislation in 2010. According to a Brazilian government forecast, recycled materials will contribute US$104 billion in increased economic activity around the 2014 World Cup.
