Lafarge chimney demolition a blast

11 May 2010

Erith Group is well into a two year contract for the demolition of Lafarge's former cement works in Northfleet in Kent, UK, that is believed to be the largest demolition project in Europe.

Major landmarks on the site were two 168 m (552 ft) chimneys that were brought down in a controlled explosive demolition in March 2010.

The resulting debris will be crushed and reused on site along with material from the 70 other structures that make up the contract.

Erith predicts that it will achieve a recycling rate of 98% across the entire project, with only some 3,000 tonnes of asbestos lined concrete cladding going to landfill.
