From old to new

21 September 2015

Waste that came from the demolition of the former Yorkshire Post building in Leeds is being used as fill on the Kirkstall Forge community housing and leisure development, which incorporates a new railway station due to open in November 2015 on the Skipton to Leeds line in the UK. Leeds-based aggregates and quarrying company Mone Brothers has supplied more than 15,000 tonnes of recycled aggregate to the project.

The original Kirkstall Forge station closed in 1905 after 45 years in service. The new station is one of two, along with Apperley Bridge, to be under construction on the busy commuter line.

"We're pleased to be playing our part in the regeneration of the city of Leeds," explained Mone Brothers director Phil Mone, "and using resources efficiently by recycling construction waste plays a big part in creating a sustainable future."

Over the last 50 years Mone Brothers, with over 70 employees, has diversified into quarrying, recycling and plant and wagon hire. Supplying a wide range of products to both trade and retail, the business has contributed towards many significant UK construction and civil engineering projects.
