VIDEO: Final big blast completes demolition at Bell Bay

Works to prepare for the demolition at Bell Bay Power Station, which was first commissioned in the early 1970s, began in April 2024. The demolition of the boiler house took place in October 2025.

To bring down the stack – said to be one of the tallest structures in Tasmania – a total of 41 kg of explosives were used in a controlled implosion, with electronic detonators programmed to control timing.

Strict safety controls were put in place, including a 400-metre exclusion zone monitored by trained sentries and traffic controllers.

Hydro Tasmania project director Aaron McCreath said the final big blast had been a success.

“Bringing down such a tall and narrow structure is very complex work and requires a highly skilled specialist team.

McMahon Services Australia also managed asbestos and hazardous material at the site in accordance with Work, Health & Safety regulations, guidelines and safe work practices, including oversight from an independent asbestos assessor.

Hydro Tasmania engaged with the community in the lead up to the demolition through emails, letters, social media and direct communication with nearby residents and businesses.

All work at the site is expected to complete in the next few months.
