Develon introduces AI-based E-Stop system for Series 9 excavators

The new features, available as an option, combine artificial intelligence, cameras and radar sensors to monitor the area around the machine and intervene when a person is detected within a defined safety zone.

At the centre of the package is the E-Stop system, which can automatically halt swing and reverse movements if a person enters a four-metre danger zone around the excavator.

The system works in conjunction with Develon’s Smart All-Around Viewing Monitor (SAVM) and a Virtual Wall function that allows operators to set working boundaries.

The platform uses six cameras and three radar sensors to provide 360-degree monitoring with a detection range of up to 13 metres. Operators receive visual and audible alerts in the cab if personnel are identified within the monitored area.

The safety zones are divided into two stages: a yellow warning zone, where alerts are triggered and travel speed is automatically reduced from six metres, and a red danger zone, where swing and reverse functions are stopped from four metres.

According to Develon, the system is designed to recognise human presence rather than static objects, in an effort to reduce unnecessary interruptions to work.

The company said the new safety technologies are intended to address risks associated with limited visibility and machine movement on congested construction sites.

The Series 9 excavator range, which appears at ConExpo/Con-Agg 2026 in Las Vegas, was launched last year and forms part of Develon’s broader move towards increased automation and digitalisation across its equipment portfolio.
