Coastal Recycling invests in C&D waste recycling facility

By Lindsay Gale21 February 2011

Construction has begun on a US$11 million (€8.1 million) C&D materials recovery centre in Jacksonville, Florida, that is expected to be completed by July 2011. The site is being built by Coastal Recycling Services, based in the city.

According to co-managing partner Charlie Latham: "The costs associated with recycling at this level are significant. We are spending substantially more money on specialised recycling equipment because of the city's aggressive recycling rate requirements. Of course, we support the city's recycling goals and look forward to contributing to the state's new recycling goal of 75% by 2020.

Coastal had to obtain state and local permits to build and operate the new facility - Jacksonville requires all recycling facilities to recycle a minimum of 60% of waste brought into the site and 80% after 30 months of operation. In all, obtaining the necessary approvals and putting the necessary finance in place prior to construction commencing took the company some three years.

When the facility comes into service, it will service customers in North Florida, and will take both source-separated and co-mingled C&D loads for processing.
