CDE to showcase waste-to-resource solutions at Hillhead

The company will demonstrate how its solutions can offer new, commercially viable applications and support the circular economy by maximising the value of clay.

A main focus will be its ProPress filter press which was launched at Hillhead 2024.

William Melanophy, head of solutions, said, “Since we first launched the ProPress two years ago at this very trade show it has been installed in a vast array of applications across the world and has been operational for 80,000 hours.

He pointed to recycling operations in Australia, contaminated waste treatment in Europe and natural sand and gravel applications in the UK as examples where the ProPress has been employed to save space on urban sites and improve safety with the removal of settling ponds.

“When we think of uses for the filter cake, there is the traditional outlets such as landfill capping and pipe bedding, but we now know that clay can be used in a much wider range of high value applications to support the circular economy.”

One such is in cement where calcined clay can be used as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) to reduce clinker content.

With the cement sector under pressure to reduce its carbon footprint, SCMs are regarded as one of the most scalable ways to cut clinker content and carbon emissions.

Industry reports confirm that calcined clay is one of the fastest-growing SCM categories as the construction industry shifts to lower carbon blends, said CDE.

Instead of mining new clay, CDE’s solutions can recover clay from construction, demolition and excavation waste, as well as overburden, and dredging and tunnelling spoil.

When recovered and engineered through washing technology, clay can serve many high-value applications across construction, land engineering and cement, the company concluded.
