CDE in circular construction project in Sweden

CDE and Roma Grus AB are implementing circular construction practices on the Swedish island of Gotland, converting construction and demolition (C&D) waste into reusable building materials.

The approach aims to address resource constraints on the island while supporting local construction projects.

Roma Grus began phasing out virgin sand and aggregate in 2019, installing a CDE-engineered wash plant to process C&D waste into high-quality materials for concrete and infrastructure projects.

The plant now processes 125,000 tonnes of material annually, up from 60,000 tonnes in its first year.

The recycled materials are being used in housing projects led by GotlandsHem, the island’s municipal housing company, in partnership with construction firm Peab AB.

Isa Wästlund and Jonas Hammarlund of GotlandsHem said the projects aim to combine housing development with sustainability and resource efficiency.

Patrick Dahl, director of Energicentrum Gotland, said the initiative highlights a growing focus on sustainability and resource management on the island.

CDE said similar circular solutions are being applied internationally, including in Hawaii, Long Island, the Isle of Man, and Aruba, where the company is helping reduce reliance on imported materials and support local construction industries.

Roma Grus plans to install 6,000 solar panels in 2025 to power its operations, aligning with the EU’s 30 by 2030 Clean Energy for EU Islands initiative and Sweden’s net-zero greenhouse gas target by 2045.

Emil Höglund, production manager at Roma Grus, said demand for circular products is increasing. CDE will also host Circle 2026: Closing the Gap, a symposium in Brussels on 7 May 2026, bringing together industry leaders to discuss sustainable materials and circular construction practices.
