Cat’s new D9 dozer designed to lower operating costs

Caterpillar introduces its new D9 dozer to global markets with a promise the machine can lower operating costs by up to 3%, and fuel consumption by as much as 5%.

The smallest of Cat’s line of “large dozers,” the D9 replaces the D9T model and offers customisable configurations to meet application needs around the world, according to Caterpillar. The is designed to lower overall costs per unit of material moved by up to 3%.

Efficiencies gained through a new torque converter with stator clutch are said to reduce fuel consumption by as much as 5%, and the new dozer reduces maintenance and repair costs by as much as 4%.

Powered by the Cat C18 engine, which has a range of exhaust aftertreatment solutions available, including configurations to meet U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final/EU Stage V regulations and configurations equivalent to U.S. EPA Tier 2 and Tier 3, the D9 features differential steering for a tight turning radius and the ability to maintain ground speed while turning.

The suspended undercarriage is designed to deliver more track contact with the ground for less slippage and greater productivity.

With an operating weight of 49988 kg, the D9 can be equipped with a range of blades and attachments, enabling it to work in a variety of applications, including production dozing, site maintenance, fleet support and ripping. 

Featuring a frame that absorbs and withstands high-impact shock loads encountered in severe applications, the D9 offers design improvements that reduce maintenance and repair costs, the company says. The newly integrated AutoLube system results in fewer grease points to limit daily maintenance procedures. Extended filter change intervals, simplified component removal and continuous fluid level monitoring also aid in further lowering operating costs.

Sensors integrated into the D9 provide access to advanced operating technology, including Standard Product Link Elite and Vital Information Management System (VIMS) which are promoted as powerful machine management tools that provide customers with dozer information such as location, operating hours and machine condition as well as production information.

Available Automated Blade Assist makes use of preset blade pitch positions for load, carry and spread tasks to increase efficiency and reduce operator workload. The Cat AutoCarry option automates blade lift to maintain desired blade load to improve load consistency, reduce track slippage and increase productivity. Optional Automatic Ripper Control maintains ripper depth to limit track slip.

The new D9 will be available in the fourth quarter of 2020.
