Manchester, UK, based contractor J Freeley Ltd has recently completed a contract to remove 46 redundant three storey student accommodation blocks on a three acre site on the Salford University campus where health and safety was the top priority for the Salford University contract administrator Paul Kirkup.

Unusually, because of the number of heavy vehicle and demolition equipment movements on the site, a dedicated entrance to the site was put in place that was used solely by Freeley vehicles. In addition, a tight deadline was imposed by the client to ensure that the demolition work was completed during a holiday period when few students were on the campus.

According to Mr Kirkup: "Vehicle movements were tightly managed and regulated throughout the project to ensure there was minimal disruption to the small number of university staff and students in the occupied parts of the accommodation area."

Sustainability was the name of the game for the project. All demolition waste was segregated and dispatched for recycling, with 10,000 tonnes of brick and concrete crushed and processed on site to provide recycled aggregates for future use in other construction projects. In addition to the demolition work, Freeley carried out asbestos removal as appropriate and other ancillary works.
