AF Gruppen wins third major North Sea decommissioning contract in a year

Norwegian contractor AF Gruppen, through its subsidiary AF Offshore Decom in a consortium with Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC), has been awarded a contract by an unnamed North Sea operator for the engineering, preparation, removal and disposal (EPRD) of one of its platforms on the UK Continental Shelf.

The EPRD project is the third contract secured by the consortium from the same operator within a year.

The facility features a steel structure, with the topsides weighing approximately 23,000 tonnes and the supporting structure around 12,000 tonnes.

The contract also includes an option for the removal of selected conductors and subsea structures.

The company said it will commence offshore platform surveys immediately, followed by detailed engineering and offshore preparatory works within the next eight years.

The platform will be removed in a multi-year removal campaign by HMC’s vessels and transported to AF Environmental Base Vats for onshore dismantling, recycling and disposal within the next decade.

The previous two contracts were announced in February and July 2026, covering offshore platforms with topsides weighing around 27,500 tonnes and 38,500 tonnes respectively.

“Securing a third contract from this particular client in the last year is a significant achievement and a strong endorsement of our consortium’s capability. This award reflects our established track record of delivering safe, efficient and high-quality EPRD solutions on some of the North Sea’s most complex installations,” said Lars Myhre Hjelmeset, EVP Offshore at AF Gruppen.
