Brokk robots were used to carry out precision demolition on the Zenit ST Petersburg football stadium in Russia

Three Brokk demolition robots had a striking role at the Zenit St Petersburg football stadium on Krestovskiy Ostrov in the city of the same name as part of Russian preparations for the 2018 World Cup. Brokk’s Russia dealer Nowitex AB supplied contractor Transstroj 3AO with a Brokk 180 and two 330s equipped with buckets, breakers, crushers and shears. Transstroj planned to use the machines as an alternative to diamond concrete cutting techniques in an effort to reduce the cost of carrying out the partial demolition work required for the stadium’s redevelopment.

The major part of the contract involved the removal of more than 2,000 cubic metres (71,000 cubic feet) of reinforced concrete at a single location at the stadium followed by additional precision removal of concrete from other sections around the stadium.

The 330s, equipped with Darda CC520 concrete crushers were used to break out sections of concrete from the 250 mm (10 inch) thick structure, while the 180 drilled access points into the concrete for its larger siblings. Once the external demolition work on the stadium was completed, the robots were moved inside to carry out further precision demolition, avoiding the need for any diamond cutting work to be carried out.
