The contractor recently dismantled the Mainz South motorway interchange, which is used by approximately 180,000 vehicles every day, over the course of single weekend.

The project saw the company remove the north bridge section interchange, which contained “an extremely large amount of prestressed steel”.

Mexner used ten Volvo excavators each equipped with Epiroc hydraulic breakers, ranging from the manufacturer’s HB 3100 to HB 5800 models, to take down the structure.

According to Epiroc, the high performance capabilities and low operating costs of its hydraulic hammers were the key reason behind Mexner’s decision to use the models.

The HB series hydraulic hammers are specifically designed and engineered for primary demolition of massive reinforced concrete structures, such as highways, as well as secondary crushing on construction sites and in quarries.

Mexner’s Managing Director, Thomas Mexne, said: “We have deconstructed many highway bridges in the past.

“When faced with such high concrete grades with strong reinforcement, the hydraulic breakers from Epiroc are ideally suited.”
