UK-based demolition contractor and plant hirer PGC Demolition has purchased four new Extec C-12+ track-mounted mobile crushers.

One of the new crushers has been put into immediate operation at Pilkington Tiles, Salford, while a second is operating at the Highmoor Landfill site operated by Veolia Environmental Services in Oldham.

The huge site is a former sandstone quarry, which has been worked for over 45 years and been used as landfill site for at least 30.

It is currently in the process of being bunded, sealed and high walled to minimise leachates and ensure no pollution of the water table from landfill material occurs. At present two large cells are being constructed, with the crusher preparing a clean 75 mm product to line the bunds.

As the material has been moved around the quarry on several occasions it also contains a high percentage of heavy clay from the overspill. This, explained managing director Peter Cordwell, it is a particularly awkward product to process.

"At present we are obtaining 1200 tonnes a day of clean product. We usually have the C-12+ running with a three way screener if we are producing a 150 and 75 mm product, but at present we are using it to bulk produce just one size for the liners," he said.

High production rates have been possible, added Mr Cordwell, thanks to "controls [that] are clear and simple to use." On the maintenance side, he said the self lubrication idea is "excellent", while the large grizzly bars are also excellent for removing the fines and clay from the product.

"The long conveyor enables us to stockpile huge amounts without constantly having a wheeled loader in attendance and the jaws have a wider angle, which means we seldom get jams," he added.

Family-owned PGC Demolition operates across the demolition, skip hire, remediation and plant hire sectors.
