London-based McGee Group has won the contract to demolish the building at 44 Lincoln’s Inn Fields

As principal contractor for the deconstruction and demolition works of the existing eight storey building – occupied by the charity Cancer Research UK – McGee is currently preparing the site in close coordination with Westminster City Council and the LSE.

It is also working with other contractors ahead of the main works, which start in September.

McGee will be on site until the spring of 2018.

The deconstruction and demolition will make way for a new building to be known as The Marshall Building in recognition of philanthropist and financier Sir Paul Marshall, who pledged £30 million (US $39.7 million) to the school to create the Marshall Institute for Philanthropy and Social Entrepreneurship.

The new building will house the academic departments of Accounting, Finance and Management and research centres including the Financial Markets Group.

Nick Taylor, McGee’s head of demolition, said: “We have been fortunate enough to secure the project and are looking forward to working with LSE and their professional team.”

LSE director of estates Julian Robinson added: “We have a very ambitious estates strategy but given our constrained location, we don’t seem to have any easy projects. We need top quality contractors to deliver them and McGee has made an impressive start.”
