UK contractor KDC Contractors has been awarded an international safety award by chemical giant Dow. Dow's annual safety awards are intended to recognise a project carried out by a contractor with the most impressive safety record.

KDC gained this accolade for its work at Dow's Wilton site on Teesside following its closure. This plant was formerly the UK's sole producer of ethylene oxide and glycol (EO/EG). Having put rigid safety policies in place prior to work commencing, the KDC project had no reportable incidents over the course of the 24 week programme. The project was also praised for its recycling ethos, with more than 97% of waste arising being processed, including 10,000 tonnes of ferrous and non-ferrous materials.

According to Martin O'Donnel, KDC's director of health, safety and environment: "This is a fantastic achievement and a true reflection of the safety culture within our organisation. Accident prevention is of paramount importance to us and this is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the KDC team."

Will Simpson, director of oil, gas and processes at KDC, who was responsible for delivering the Dow Wilton on Teesside project, echoed this by saying: "It's great to have our excellent safety record publically recognised by Dow. We always have robust procedures in place and up to date training to ensure the well-being of our employees, our suppliers and clients. Safe practices and safety aware people are vital in our line of business - there is nothing more important at KDC than working safely."
