What are the top 10 demolition and recycling stories for 2021?

With Covid-19 continuing to cast its shadow across the world, it has been another challenging year for the demolition and recycling sectors, as well as the wider construction market.
However, there has still been plenty of activity as stakeholders continue to adjust to a new normal and carry out business as usual.
We look back at some of D&RIs biggest stories from throughout the year…
1 - World Demolition Awards shortlists announced for 2021
More than 50 projects and products from 36 companies emerged from a record number of entries to contest this year’s World Demolition Awards in Chicago, USA.

A world-record setting demolition project was then named as the proud holder of a World Demolition Award as well.

3 - Building collapses during demolition works
A five-storey building in Gwangju City, which is located south of Seoul in South Korea, has collapsed during demolition works.
The ‘Hakdong’ building, situated in the Dong-gu area, suffered a complete structural failure on the afternoon on 9 June and collapsed onto a stationary city bus below.
4 – Keltbray demolishes Ferrybridge chimney stacks
Keltbray has demolished two 198 m high chimney stacks at Ferrybridge ‘C’ Power Station in the UK.
Located near Leeds in West Yorkshire, England, the former coal-fired electricity plant was closed in 2016 after 50 years of service.
5 - Epiroc to acquire breaker manufacturer
Infrastructure and mining equipment specialist Epiroc has agreed to acquire DandA Heavy Industries, a South Korean manufacturer of hydraulic breakers, for an undisclosed sum.
DandA Heavy Industries, based in Seoul, manufactures and sells hydraulic breakers for the construction, demolition, rock excavation, quarrying and infrastructure industries.
6 - OSHA cites two over Killen Power Plant
The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) proposed penalties of more than $180,000 for Adamo Group following the demolition collapse at the Killen Power Generation Station in Ohio last December.

7 – Veit and Company appoints its first female CEO
In May, US demolition specialist Veit and Company announced that Kelly Veit will succeed Vaughn Veit as chief executive officer (CEO) of the specialty contracting and waste management firm, effective immediately.
8 - Billion-plus UK demolition framework announced
National framework provider Pagabo – based in the United Kingdom – issued a prior information notice (PIN) for its brand-new national framework designed for demolition and land preparation works within the built environment, valued at £1.1 billion (US$1.56 billion).
9 - New ownership for AR Demolition
Senior managers at United Kingdom-based contractor AR Demolition have completed a change of ownership at the company.
10 - Rugeley Power Station demolished
United Kingdom-based contractor Brown and Mason has completed the demolition of four cooling towers at the former Rugeley power station site in the English midlands.
