The family business, which operates across London and its surrounding counties, recycles over a million tonnes of construction and demolition waste annually and is making the switch from traditional oil in order to become Net Zero by 2035.

HVO is a sustainable has sustainable and 100% renewable biofuel that can reduce net carbon dioxide emissions by up to 90% and nitrogen oxide emissions by almost 30%.

It also lowers the amount of particulate matter and carbon monoxide generated by internal combustion engines, by as much as 86% and 90% respectively.

Jacqueline O’Donovan, managing director at O’Donovan Waste, said: “We are acutely aware that our biggest impact on the environment is our vehicles and along with other initiatives already in place, we are delighted to be able to commit to using HVO on all HGV road vehicles by October 2022. This bold move has a huge positive effect in terms of our environmental impact.”

O’Donovan’s use of HVO is the latest in a series of moves its has made to reach its 2035 Net Zero target.

The company, which was recently acquired by Swedish C&D waste specialist Sortera, has already refined its waste management processes to reduce its carbon emissions - investing in sustainable buildings, new processing facilities and equipment that its says ensures “100% of waste processed is reused, recycled and ultimately diverted from landfill”.

Jacqueline said: “We are clearly demonstrating that we are in line with our clients’ needs and requirements to adopt more sustainable processes and services, as well as the worldwide need to act now to prevent further global warming.

“I know that existing clients will be thrilled at this enormous change and I sincerely hope that new clients appreciate a real commitment in this immense global challenge and support us as a business by adopting our service offerings.”
