Iconic chimney at Longannet Power Station demolished

British company Brown & Mason has demolished the 183 m (600 ft) tall chimney stack at Longannet Power Station in Scotland.

Located in Kincardine-on-Forth in Fife, the power station was the largest coal fired plant in Scotland - and the last of its kind in the country. It became operational in 1970 and was closed in March 2016.

Brown and Mason took down the structure, which is owned by energy firm ScottishPower, via a controlled explosion on  Thursday 9 December. 

The demolition specialist used 700 kg (1,543 lb) of explosives and Scotland’s first minister Nicola Sturgeon pushed the button to initiate the blast. 

“We are very proud to say we have safely demolished Longannet’s 600 ft chimney, Scotland’s last remaining coal fired power station,” said Brown and Mason managing director Nick Brown.

“The demolition is a massive achievement and in doing so we are championing the UK’s drive towards net zero.”
