Rye Group ‘on track to slash carbon emissions’

British demolition contractor the Rye Group says it is on track to cut its carbon emissions by 90% in the next two years after expanding its use of HVO [Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil] Green D+ fuel into its 30-strong fleet of road vehicles.

Based in Bedfordshire in the south of England – which also provides remediation and ground and enabling works – Rye Group took delivery of its first tank of HVO Green D+ fuel in August, for use in equipment at a Kodak job site in Essex.

Since then, the company says it has substituted the use of red diesel in all its site equipment. Under a new contract with fuel and lubricant provider New Era Fuels, 600,000 litres of the green fuel will be delivered in the next 12 months.

The group forecasts a reduction in carbon emissions of more than 1,700 t by autumn 2022, which is says will almost complete its target to slash all fuel emissions by 90% by December the following year.

“Reducing our environmental impact is incredibly important to the entire team at Rye Group and since launching our own Sustainable Standard philosophy in early 2020, I am delighted that we are making such positive progress with simple but effective changes in how we operate,“ said managing director Simon Barlow.

“As one of the first demolition contractors to roll out the use of HVO across all company related vehicles, we are hopeful that others will be inspired to trial the diesel alternative, resulting in widespread industry change.”
